If your child attends a private school or homeschooled, Jon Peterson scholarships from the Ohio Department of Education provide needed tutoring for struggling learners. To apply:
- First, call the Special Education Department of your public school district and ask for your child to be tested for a learning difference. The school district has 60 days to complete the testing.
- After testing, the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) created by the school district makes you eligible for approximately $10,000 for tutoring.
- Once the IEP is complete, a Jon Peterson provider can submit an application in your behalf to the Ohio Department of Education for the scholarship.
- The scholarship is then awarded, and Orton-Gillingham (OG) tutoring can begin.
OG tutoring is the most effective method for teaching kids who are dyslexic or otherwise struggle with learning. I am an OG tutor, and begin this journey with my own son in 2011. For more information, contact me: tutor@OGparents.org. Future blog posts will further explain this important scholarship.
My child attend k12 and is about to have his IEP and ETR updated this month. After the IEP is set we plan to homeschool as virtual public is not working for him. What sort of help can my son be granted?
He has learning disabilities (possible dyslexia) as well as ADHD and behavioral issues.
Any help would be appreicated,
Christina
He will be eligible for a Jon Peterson scholarship once he is homeschooled. Please contact me to make application to ODE. What is your timeframe for homeschooling?

Is charter schools included my son has an iep and etr but attends kipp Columbus and he really needs tutoring. Would he be eligible?
Arica
Unfortunately, he would not be eligible for the Jon Peterson scholarship because he attends a public (charter) school. Only if a child attends a private school or homeschooled can they attend.

My son is on an iep and an etr we are currently trying to get him to homeschooling but with Ecot and there issues we cant log him in so were plan b’ing it to treca or connections. How do we go about this?
Clarissa
I am not sure how Treca or connections works. I provide with Orton-Gillingham tutoring, one to one with kids. Best bet would be to connect ODE, the Ohio Department of Education for more information for online schools.
